One of the first things you need to provide for your newborn baby
is to create a safe and comfortable environment to sleep in. You may be
thinking of turning the spare room into a nursery painted with warm and
bright colours. The cot is also very important. Not only will it
provide a safe and cosy place to sleep it will also help with the baby's
growth and development. When a baby is born their bones are very soft
and as they will be spending most of their initial months lying down it
is very important that they are lying down on a surface that can support
their body properly.
Currently
there are two types of mattresses that you can use for your baby's cot.
The first one is the spring mattress. This uses coiled pocket springs
that are padded with either natural coir and wool fibres or foam. The
padding provides extra comfort for the baby while lying down. A quality
made spring baby mattress will provide more than adequate support for
your baby's back. They are also very durable and you should expect a
quality made mattress to last you for at least four years. However, they
can be quite heavy and quality made ones are expensive.
The second type that you can use is the foam mattress. This is lighter and cheaper than the spring mattress. The foam can still provide good support however, it is not as durable as the spring coil. Due to its light weight the foam mattress is more convenient to move around and it is also cheaper to buy. Because the foam is a synthetic material it means that it is not as effective as natural fibres to enable the body to breathe. It also means it cannot absorb heat and moisture from the body as effective as a spring coil mattress made from natural fibres.
To make your cot mattress last longer you can use a mattress protector that will prevent the leakage of liquids such as regurgitated milk and saliva into the fibres of the mattress.
